A Secret Serendipity reflection

Lily and Shadow: A Story of Friendship and Honest Care

A fictional story about friendship, honesty, and learning to care for another living creature.

Lily lived in a small village near a wooded hill. She liked the sound of the stream and the shapes the clouds made above the fields, but she wished she had someone to share her discoveries with.

One afternoon, she noticed a little dog sitting near the village path. He watched the people passing by, then lowered his head onto his paws. Lily wanted to call him her own at once.

“Shadow,” she whispered, trying out a name. The dog lifted his ears.

For a moment, Lily imagined a wonderful secret: a companion who would follow her everywhere and never belong to anyone else. Then she noticed his empty place beside the path. Perhaps someone was looking for him. Perhaps he needed something she did not know how to give.

Lily went to find her mother.

“There’s a dog by the path,” she said. “I wanted to keep him a secret because I thought you would say no. But I think he needs help.”

Her mother put down the basket she was carrying. “Thank you for telling me. Let’s find out what he needs before we decide anything.”

A different kind of kindness

With help from the adults in the village, they brought the dog to a place where he could be cared for while they looked for anyone who might be missing him. Lily asked questions and learned that liking an animal was only the beginning of looking after one.

“He will need care even on the days I’m busy,” she said.

“Yes,” her mother answered. “And we would need to decide together whether our family could provide it.”

Lily visited when the adults said it was a good time. She listened to what the caregivers asked and helped with small tasks. The dog seemed to recognize her voice, and she was happy to see him lift his head when she arrived.

In time, when the search for an owner was complete and the caregivers said he could be adopted, Lily’s family talked carefully about the responsibility. They made a plan together. Only then did Shadow come home.

A friendship with room for others

Shadow did not become Lily’s only friend. Other children asked about him, and she discovered that sharing a story could begin a conversation. Some days they walked together with her family. On rainy afternoons, Lily read while Shadow rested nearby.

One evening, she watched him settle into his bed and offered a quiet prayer. “Thank you, God, for this friend. Help us take good care of him.”

She still loved the name she had whispered beside the path. But she was glad Shadow was no longer a secret. The care he needed had grown when she allowed other people to help.

A question to carry from the story

What changes when Lily moves from wanting a companion to asking what the dog needs? Think about a time when honesty or shared responsibility made a caring action possible.
