Money can buy finery but not beauty, a house but not a home, medicine but not health. Money can buy luxuries but not culture, fun but not happiness, religion but not salvation, a bed but not sleep, books but not a brain. It can buy food but not an appetite. Money is a passport to most everywhere, but usually not heaven.
Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy you different forms of misery. If you have money, and the things money can buy, make sure you don’t lose the things that money can’t buy, the things that matter.
Happiness depends on individual life decisions and the ability to balance different aspects of our lives. It may be uncomfortable to analyze our relationship with money, our goals, and the possibility that we lack the initiative to earn the necessary money to carry out those goals. Maybe it’s easier to just complain about not having enough money and demonize those that do.
Its very possible that we tell ourselves that “Money can’t buy happiness” in an attempt to rationalize our envy of those who do have money. We often compare ourselves with people who have more opportunities than we do and we may feel jealous. It then depends on us if this envy will motivate us to act, be content with where we are, refocus on our own lives, or discourage us into a victim mentality.
But just maybe, if you think money can’t buy happiness, you just aren’t spending it right.
