Once upon a time, in a quaint little village nestled at the foot of a great mountain, there lived a young girl named Lily. Lily was a bright and cheerful child, with a heart full of love and a head full of dreams. But, despite her joyful nature, Lily was lonely. Her parents were always busy working in the fields, and she had no siblings or friends her age to play with.

One day, while wandering through the forest on the outskirts of the village, Lily stumbled upon a small, furry creature. It was a dog, a beautiful little puppy with big brown eyes and a wagging tail. The puppy was all alone, just like Lily, and the two became instant friends.

Lily knew that her parents would never allow her to keep a dog, so she decided to keep the puppy a secret. She named him Shadow, for he was her constant companion, following her wherever she went. Lily and Shadow would spend their days exploring the forest, playing games, and sharing secrets.

Be aware. Recognize when the emotions that you feel belong to someone else. If your spouse is angry, identify that emotion and acknowledge it, but remind yourself that it is their anger, not yours. When someone is trying to bring you down, it’s more a reflection of them as a person, and their relationship with themselves, than of your worth.

Have a shower in the morning and imagine the water washing away all of your negative energy down the drain, and the water filing you with white light and love. Drinking at least one large glass of water upon waking up will help a lot, too. Water is naturally grounding.

Thanksgiving is a day to spend some time with the people we care about, and to think about what it is that has made us the way we are today. It is a time of year to be thankful for everything we have. There’s something about the warm, coziness of being home with family for the holidays that lifts everyone’s spirit. Thanksgiving is a day filled with the sound of a crackling fire and the smell of a turkey roasting in the oven. But how did it all come about?

Thanksgiving Day of today is the celebration of the Pilgrim’s meal with the Native Americans on the fourth Thursday of November. It commemorates how newcomers were first welcomed by celebrating the harvest with their Native American neighbors.  Originally, it was traditionally celebrated on the last Thursday of November in the early 1800’s, but left up to the individual states to decide when each would celebrate.

Sarah Josepha Hale is a writer known for campaigning for an official date for 40 years through letters to political leaders to get this holiday recognized.  Finally in 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation that all states will celebrate Thanksgiving on the same day. This act was an effort to unite the North and the South, but due to the rebellion of the North’s authority, the holiday was not consistently celebrated on the same day until after Reconstruction.

A joint resolution was signed by Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 to change the holiday to the fourth Thursday of November rather than the last, believing the earlier economic boost to be beneficial to the United States economy.

The Japanese observe Labor Thanksgiving Day, which has roots with harvest celebrations but now celebrates labor, production, and thankfulness. Derived from ancient harvest festival rituals named Niinamesai, its modern meaning is more tied to a celebration of hard work and community involvement, hence its translation: Labor Thanksgiving Day.

A variation on America’s Thanksgiving can be found in the West African nation of Liberia, which was founded in the 19th century by freed slaves from the U.S.  Mainly celebrated by Christians, Liberians take the concept of the cornucopia and fill their churches with baskets of local fruits like bananas, papayas, mangoes, and pineapples. Cut out leaf shapes from various fall shades of paper. Let each family member write something for which they are thankful on a leaf and attach to the tree with tape.

A variation could be a Thanksgiving Centerpiece. Cut a branch or two from the yard and put in a vase. Cut leaves from colored construction paper and put a string on each one. Each person takes a leaf or two and writes their name and date on one side and what they are thankful for on the other side, then hang them on the branch that would be in the vase in the center of the table. Leaves can be carried over from year to year as new ones are added. When we help others, what we are really doing is helping ourselves.  The joy and happiness that love and compassion for others brings to us is one of the best kept secrets of life.  Helping others always makes us feel good.

A hidden part of us rejoices when we reach out to one another in everyday life.  We search for happiness in romance, achievements, possessions, exciting experiences, and all of these bring us some satisfaction, but not enough to bring us real joy.  When we help others, we receive happiness back, tenfold.

Doing good eliminates lots of stress. When you do something good for someone else, your brain’s pleasure centers light up, releasing endorphins, and this generates feelings of satisfaction and gratitude. When you do good, you will feel motivated to do good again. Generosity gets rewarded, even if it doesn’t always come straight back from the one you helped.

People who volunteer tend to have higher self-esteem and are much happier. When you do good for others, you are doing good for yourself. It has been proven that communities with lots of volunteers are more stable and better places to live.

We can only be happy in a world where the others are happy, too. Our happiness really does depend on the happiness of others. Helping others evokes gratitude, which naturally instills health and happiness within us.

If you want a happy life, become more aware of your negative thinking and try replacing those thoughts with some positive ones. Take a walk to clear your mind. Spending time in nature can be very renewing. Your local park will allow you to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and you will also be breathing in some fresh air. Walking is a form of exercise and exercise is one of the most dependable mood-boosters. Exercise can help you relax and it also increases your brain power. Wake up early, get that walk in, breathe all the great fresh air.

Be in touch with family and friends. Time spent with family and friends makes a big difference in how happy we feel. When we feel we have family and friends to count on when we are having a hard time, we will be much healthier. Take time to watch a sunset. We feel better when we spend money on other people, rather than ourselves. Volunteer. Give back. There is a lot of fulfillment in doing for others.

Compliment someone each day, even if it is a stranger. Smile at others. It may be the boost that someone needs to get through a difficult moment. If someone has done something nice for you, send a note telling them you care about them and tell them you appreciate them and value their friendship. Practice working towards a happier life every day. It will become a habit, and it will become easier with time.

A happy life comes about in the little things you do, and in the things you say.  Success and happiness is not in getting rich or rising high to fame.  Happiness comes when we are big of heart, and clean and broad in mind.  It is being faithful to your friends, and to the stranger, be kind.  Learn to enjoy the little things, there are so many of them.

If you don’t have it now, develop an optimistic outlook, then believe it to be true. Show kindness to others, it will make you feel really good about yourself. Smile to people you come in contact with every day. That includes friends, family, co-workers, and strangers. Love who you are, and be thankful for what you have. Exercise and healthy eating will help you on this path. There is always time to do more of what you really want to do, so make it happen. Focus on the present, not yesterday or tomorrow, for the present is all we have.

A spiritually happy person is in tune with and accepting of themselves. They feel no need to impress anyone or to compete. They are happy with themselves the way they are. Your spirituality is inside of you. We are all spiritual beings, we all have spirits within us. When we develop our own spiritual beliefs, we will find life is easier and happier. Making sense of the universe will help to overcome life’s hurdles as it helps us feel a sense of connection to something bigger, and that we are not alone.

Spiritual happiness is a state of being, not something we do or achieve. It isn’t dependent upon our mood or outer circumstances. Your eternal presence is your true self. Spiritual happiness is living in the present, for it is the only moment we have. Accept what comes to you totally and completely so that you can appreciate it, learn from it, and then let it go. Don’t struggle against the infinite scheme of things, instead, be at one with it.

Spiritual happiness is our birthright. It is ours for the experiencing. Your soul, being a reflection of the ever joyous Spirit, is, in essence, spiritual happiness itself.

The main obstacle to happiness is faulty thinking. For instance thinking someone or some thing can make you happy.    So where does one find happiness?  Stop looking outside for what can only be found inside and make a decision to be happy.

Beautiful things happen when you distance yourself from negative thinking. Be positive and smile. Smiling doesn’t always mean you are happy, it means you are strong. Stay positive and you will feel better. Happiness never comes to those that don’t appreciate what they have.

ACT WITH RESPONSIBILITY AND KINDNESS

Spend time with people who make you happy. Love who you are and treat others with care and kindness. Be honest with yourself and with others by saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Find the courage to change things that can be changed and understand that there are things that you have no control over, and just let them go. Don’t let others control what you think of yourself, for you know you are good enough. Never give up your power, for we are all unique and all have a purpose. Act with responsibility and integrity in everything you do.

When you have things that you want to achieve in your life, it’s important to remember that the end goal can be very disappointing if you approach it the wrong way, so always let your values guide you. Refuse to dwell on the mistakes or disappointments that are sometimes a part of life. Instead learn how you can make things better.

Whatever happens, take responsibility for your own life. Don’t blame others for we create our own destiny with our thoughts and actions. Live in the now by appreciating the day as the future is just an illusion. Understand that the joy of life comes from the journey, not reaching the destination. Commit random acts of kindness whenever possible. Embrace change and think positive thoughts. Wake each morning with a happy heart and trust that life is good, love is powerful and the future is full of promise.

SHARING HAPPINESS

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.  Happiness never decreases by being shared.    ~ Buddha     ~

Unlike most everything in life that is shared, happiness can be given to an infinite number of people, and your happiness will not have been diminished by the slightest bit. And you may find that you have even more happiness after you give some away.   It’s easy to see how this happens as you already do this in your life.

Every time you cheer someone up, you have lit their candle from yours. Is yours diminished? Only if you choose to allow it to happen.   The next time you are feeling cranky, maybe the person trying to talk to you isn’t trying to further annoy you, but to spread a little happiness from the flame of their candle.

Happiness can be like that. It has an amazing tendency to multiply when it is shared.
