So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning. ~ Mitch Albom (Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson)
We can say we love our neighbors, but what can we do to show it? We don’t all have a lot of money to give, but we do have time, and we can give some of this time to help others. Helping others is not only a good thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier. The people we help may be strangers, family, friends, or just about anyone. When we see someone do something kind or thoughtful, or we are on the receiving end of kindness, it inspires us to be kinder ourselves. Helping others will make us feel like we can take on the world.
People who participate in volunteer work feel more empowered than those who do not. Volunteering at a homeless shelter, a hospital, or a thrift store, meeting people face-to-face, can help reduce loneliness and isolation. The very act of giving back to the community boosts our happiness, health and sense of well being.
Nothing can turn someone’s day around like a compliment. The best way to cheer up is to try to cheer someone else up. The benefit of seeing another person smile makes every day sunny and bright.
