Beaver Moon – A Time of Gratitude
The Full Moon for November is named after beavers because this is the time they become particularly active building their winter dams in preparation for the cold season. The beaver is mainly nocturnal, so they keep working under the light of the Full Moon. It is the time when hunters set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Beavers make dams of wood and mud. In the middle, they build dome-shaped homes called lodges with underwater entrances. Beavers continue to grow throughout their lives, and so do their teeth. They constantly gnaw on wood, but because the enamel in a beaver’s incisors contains iron, their front teeth never wear down. This month of November, the Full Beaver Moon brings us the message that we are to prepare for the cold winter and not to be caught without spiritual fortification. It is a time to nurture yourself and do things that bring warmth and comfort to your soul. It is an emotional time–a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships. The silvery lunar glow of this Full Moon looks especially cold at this time of year, as the warmth of early autumn begins to give way to the chill of winter. It’s easy to envision the Moon’s power in these and many other cultures on long, chilly nights, when the Full Moon of November casts its “frosty” light on the landscape — all night long. The Frosty Moon comes in autumn. The Summer has gone, the nights are frosty and the days are cool. The leaves are falling from the trees and the snow is on its way. The Full Moon of November is large in the sky, and is often called the Frosty Moon. The “spiritual winter” seeks to give us rest, let things that need to die do so, and offers the hope of new growth. If we slow down and let it do its job, then winter becomes something that we can treasure and not just make it through. Winter time is a season when the old is washed away and shortly after, renewal begins. It is a beautiful time of year when we think about it from that perspective.

Chinese mythology claims that Ch’ang-O also called Chang’e is the Chinese Goddess of the Full White Moon. She does not personify the Moon like other Moon goddesses. It rises quickly at sunset, faster than any other Full Moon to rise at that time, and lingers until morning where it’s energy will continue to loom.
