Serving Others: A Prayer for Useful Care

Homeless

A prayer for serving others can begin with willingness and a question: what would actually help? The answer may be a small, practical task rather than a dramatic act of generosity.

A prayer for useful care

God of compassion, help me notice the people around me. Give me patience to listen before assuming I know what they need. Show me where my time, attention, or abilities could be useful.

Help me offer what I can with humility. Let my promises be honest, my help respectful, and my care free from the need for praise. Give me wisdom to recognize my limits and generosity to receive help as well as offer it. Amen.

Listen before choosing a task

If someone is struggling, ask a specific question: “Would it help if I brought a meal?” or “Is there a task you would like help with?” Let the person decide what is welcome.

In Jesus’ example of service, care takes a concrete form. You can begin with an ordinary responsibility, a kept commitment, or attention to someone who is often overlooked.

Let one action follow the prayer

Choose something that fits your circumstances today. It might be returning a call, sharing a task, or thanking someone whose quiet work supports others. Respect a refusal and protect the person’s privacy.

If you need support yourself, asking for it is also part of a life of mutual care. Service does not require pretending that you have unlimited resources.
