Lavender is one of history’s most celebrated and versatile scents.  The Romans used lavender in their baths for washing, for its healing and antiseptic qualities, and to deter insects.  The Egyptians used lavender as an ingredient in incense and perfume.  Queen Elizabeth I used lavender as a tea to treat her frequent migraines.  Today we use lavender as a tea, to dress wounds, to induce sleep, ease depression, and reduce stress.  The holistic properties of lavender are said to assist in alleviating tension and insomnia, easing digestive upsets and calming coughs.

When used in a warm bath, lavender relaxes tension.  Add a handful of lavender blossoms or lavender salts to a warm bath just before bedtime and you should have a peaceful night’s rest.  Used in a tea, lavender works as a sedative, to further help with a calming, relaxing sleep.

Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils.  It is steam distilled from a perennial shrub with a flowery top.  Using diluted lavender essential oil during a massage relieves aching muscles.  Also try lavender essential oil as a help with relaxation during meditations.  Place a few drops of lavender essential oil on a cotton ball and notice how the light smell soothes and relaxes the mind and body.
