Incense is known to purify the air and has an extraordinary soothing effect on the mind.  This is one of the most important reasons for using incense in meditation.  The aromatic effect of incense offers tranquility to the senses.  Earlier civilizations used incense as a herbal medicine to treating health disorders.  Used in aromatherapy, incense during meditation is believed to dissipate the negative energy in the room.  Burning of incense helps to create a positive state of mind and helps condition the mind to associate the individual fragrance with a positive and peaceful mind.

Different fragrances of incense impart positive impulses to the brain.  More importantly, these positive impulses over time become a natural response to that particular scent of incense.  The mind becomes conditioned to respond in a particular way when that incense fragrance is used.  The incense fragrance that you choose for your meditation should be of a special type and only used during meditation.
