The power of scents and smells has been used throughout the centuries to cure a variety of problems.  Your olfactory system (sense of smell) is connected to an area of the brain that also controls emotions, hunger, desire and thirst.  Smelling something pleasant can help reduce stress, fight insomnia or any one of a dozen or so other things.  When an aromatic oil is inhaled, the olfactory part of the brain kicks in and releases neurochemicals that have pleasurable and relaxing effects.

Aromatherapy includes rubbing plant oil on your skin, bathing in it, or even ingesting tiny amounts.  You can also wear a fragrance or fill an aroma diffuser with water and essential oils to surround yourself with scent.  The oils used in aromatherapy are believed to have the same healing power as the plants they hail from, only in a much more concentrated form.  To lift your mood, the smell of cookies, coffee or cinnamon buns will be an instant pick-me-up.  Any pleasant smell will have a positive effect on people.  And when you’re in a good mood, you will tend to feel better about yourself and your life.
